For people, horses, and the planet
Why we moved to vegetable-tanned leather
At Albion Saddlemakers, we’re committed to making responsible choices for both our products and the planet. Our recent decision to transition to vegetable-tanned leather highlights our dedication to sustainability, quality, and the well-being of our customers. This eco-friendly process utilizes biodegradable plant-based tannins, such as quebracho, mimosa, and chestnut, making it one of the most environmentally conscious types of leather available today.
What is vegetable-tanned leather?
Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using natural plant-based tannins, which come from tree bark, leaves, and fruits. This method has been used for centuries and offers a sustainable alternative to traditional chrome-tanning processes, which use harmful chemicals. The use of plant-based tannins not only makes the leather more eco-friendly but also ensures a cleaner and safer production process.

The benefits of vegetable-tanned leather.

Environmentally Responsible
The use of natural, biodegradable tannins such as quebracho, mimosa, and chestnut in our tanning process makes our leather one of the most eco-friendly options available. By choosing Veg-tan leather, we’re reducing our environmental footprint and supporting a healthier planet.
Enhanced durability for sporting demands
Thanks to the combination of natural tanning methods and the mechanical processing of the leather, our Veg-tan leather is more resistant and can meet the rigorous demands of equestrian sports. The leather also provides double the UV protection compared to chrome-tanned alternatives, ensuring it holds up better over time, even under the harshest conditions.
Unrivalled comfort and health benefits
The careful shaping and mounting of the leather ensure an unmatched level of comfort for the rider. Additionally, pure Veg-tan leather is allergen-free and safe for both the rider and the horse, as it contains no harmful chemicals or allergens that could pose a health risk.
A leather that ages beautifully
One of the standout features of Veg-tan leather is how it ages over time. As it’s used, it develops a rich, unique patina that adds character and depth to the leather, something that chrome-tanned leather simply cannot replicate.
Why we made the change
Our move to vegetable-tanned leather is not just about reducing our environmental impact; it’s about providing our customers with a product that exceeds expectations in terms of quality, comfort, and safety. With its natural beauty, enhanced durability, and sustainability, Veg-tan leather is the perfect fit for the high standards we hold for our products and for the future we want to help create.
Consciously Crafted, Naturally Beautiful
At Albion, we use only the finest materials, selecting first-choice skins with minimal defects to ensure exceptional quality. Our tannery supports ethical and sustainable practices by offering financial assistance to farmers to remove barbed wire fencing and protect livestock from insect bites. We work exclusively with full-grain leather, which is never sanded—preserving the hide’s natural strength and character. The vegetable tanning process keeps the leather fibers intact, allowing the material to remain supple and full of life. Finally, we finish our leather with aniline—a non-coating treatment that enables it to breathe and better absorb cleaning products, enhancing both longevity and ease of care.
